Local 'Maters

This week may well mark the beginning of the local summer buying season. Buila Family Farm has started providing a couple of local stores with some of the first true summer fruits and vegetables of the season, starting with some succulent heirloom tomatoes. Local Matters is pretty sure that these varieties are the result of greenhouse goodness, but they still serve as a delectable foreshadowing of much more grower goodness to come.

Currently, Neigbhorhood Co-op Grocery serves as the repository for a cornucopia of local produce (such as the heirlooms pictured above), including cucumbers, eggplant, fresh local herbs, a plethora of spring greens (of course), snow peas, green beans, summer squash, garlic scapes, burdock root, cauliflower, broccoli, raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries ... and a sundry of other local goods!

The Town Square Market also sports a selection of local goods as well.

So far, local growers involved are Steve Smith, Buila Family Farm, Tim Francis, Josh Brown, Neth Haas, Karen Allen, Glenn Miller (not the swing band front man), and more.

So even though the season has been slowed-up a little bit by the wet and weird weather, the time is at hand to visit your local merchants and farmers' markets and to take advantage of the first summer showcase of locally-grown goods.
